If you ask me to tell you 1 thing that I LOVE about my internship it would be... the workplace and my desk! Not only is Ruby PR's office so chic and retro... but my rather large glossy wooden desk sits right next to a giant framed poster of the movie Marie Antoinette. If you go on Ruby PR's website and look under events we've put on, the after party of Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette screening is listed right under there. The Chanel sponsored party included pink French macaroons, crystal chandeliers, and an A+ guestlist. So in honor of such a special film (which I happen to adore) here are a couple of baroque-themed items that tickle my fancy!

sorry about the long hiatus..

Well to start things off...

I would like to apologize for the extra-long hiatus.. and also the delay on posting up the interview with Melissa Davis of Ruby PR. The odd thing is that I've been quite the busy bee, because as of lately you are reading up on Ruby PR's newest intern! I've honestly planned on doing the "Teen Vogue" deal and documenting bits of my experience.

So to celebrate my new and exciting step into the PR world heres a quick tip list for interns:
1. Always have a notepad ready to take down your next to-do & don't think your memory is good enough, being an intern its never really good enough.
2. A part time job :] ( because usually the most important internships can't pay all the bills )
3. Be PROactive.. being an intern there's never time for dilly-dallying (if thats the proper spelling?) Especially in a fast paced business there is always something to do!
4. Don't be afraid to ask questions.. it is honestly better to ask than to do it wrong.
5. Have fun and soak in as much training as possible.. it'll count when you apply for your next job or internship!

I haven't been really keeping tabs on the upcoming CW show Stylista, click here for some clips (which was supposedly to be named "Fashion Wars") but from what I've gathered from various internet sites/blogs is: those whose lifelong dream is to work for a Fashion magazine, are honestly, how else should I put it... pissed. And honestly I don't blame them. When I went to the audition (at hope of my chance of a job being handed to me on a silver platter) the masses of people varied: from chic FIDM students (the majority), aspiring and intelligent Fashionistas to must I say it... 'bimbos' who's favorite designers when asked included.. "Jessica Simpson" and who's favorite memory from college is having guys lined up to take her virginity. I'm not saying everyone was like that, but most of them, I couldn't picture even grabbing coffee or making copies with a major publication, let alone writing any sort of intelligent fashion based editorial. But of course, when I saw the recent clips of the show, the bimbo from the audition makes it on, for the most obvious reason- "better ratings". It honestly saddens me to see a prime spot at a prestigious magazine go to waste, but of course real Fashionistas got talent... and unfortunately the "audience" doesn't dig talent right now.. but dramatic overload.

On a lighter note... I'll be interviewing Melissa Davis this upcoming week. For those of you who haven't heard of her. She has spent about 12 years working as a Fashion Editor for various magazines (ie: Harper's BAZAAR, Lucky, 7x7, Mademoiselle etc.) and has made the jump from Fashion Editor to owning her own PR boutique.

the golden ticket: Central Saint Martins

When ever im surfing the Fashion Spot boards I always hear so much commotion and confusion on how to get into Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, which is located in London. Though I am not a fashion major (im a graphic design major, thank you very much.) I had no idea how hard it was to get into this school, the honest truth is actually that I didn't know this school existed till a friend of a friend told me about his school. I applied thinking how wonderful it would be to live in London and soak in as much European culture as possible without really knowing how extensive the alumni is and what amazing opportunities CSM gives.

But pretty much this is how I got in:

For the American students, there is this wonderful lady, Josephine Auerback who is just the most darling person you can come across. I contacted her through email, requesting an interview in Los Angeles. In less than a week she calls and confirms our interview. Now you American students, feel free to take a look at the University of the Arts (USA version) website, which you can find here. (They have interviews certain times of the year.) When I finally did get to L.A. the interview took no longer than 30 minutes, but before I went in Josephine took my portfolio and personal statement and brought it to the interviewer to have a better understanding of who I am and my goals in life.

I came in wanting to go to London College of Communication, but instead the interviewer had different plans, with the info he gathered from my work and personal statement he felt I would flourish at CSM as a Graphic Design Major instead at LCC as a Magazine Publishing Major. So after having the interview I was accepted on the spot. Now, some of you maybe wondering, why did you get to go straight to your major and NOT have to go through Foundation? Well, my resume is quite extensive since I have been working as a graphic designer for quite some time they felt that I had enough work experience and I knew exactly what path I wanted to take.

So, in short if your an American student wanting to get into CSM heres some tips:

- make sure you're personal statement IS NOT vague, the more direct you are, the better they understand you and what you want, and what CSM can give.
- your portfolio should not just be one thing over and over again, as a creative mind you should be open minded and show range in your work. oh yeah, make sure its neat too. Neatness is a plus.
- during your interview don't be afraid to be too ambitious. The Interviewer kept stressing how challenging CSM is, but I kept stressing back how much I have been waiting to be challenged and how no other art school has given me that.
- if you want to get in to the major and skip foundation make sure you have an extensive resume to back it up. Work experience and a wide-ranged portfolio is a great way to show that your ready.

The Beginning of this All

Fashion Maganista

I don't come from a socialite family, my dads not a 70's rock star, my moms not a fashion model, I don't have any brothers or sisters who are child superstars. I've never been on television and my family is made up of nurses, dentists and engineers.

To set the stage, I'm from a California suburban town in the Bay Area. About 45 minutes from San Francisco and 25 minutes from San Jose. Ive spent all 20 years of my life in this town spending my time 18 years in various Catholic/Christian schools and 2 years in a really lame Community College. So one day I decided to chase my dreams and say f*** it to it all, I drove down to Los Angeles with my loved one and went for the University of the Arts London interview. After reviewing my life, my portfolio and our odd love for travel I was accepted on the spot.

So thats the story of how I am where I am, with a glam.com internship under my belt, a Nordstrom internship in the works.. and London less than 4 months away. This is how (hopefully) the story of an Art Director for a Fashion Magazine begins.
